Tamra Seal and Ingrid V. Wells
September 13 - 20, 2014
The volume is turned up on chroma, shine, and perversion as audience members are welcomed into a sticky-sweet exhibition, SUPAH SWEET by Tamra Seal and Ingrid V. Wells. Presented by Studio 110 Projects, this over-the-top show manifests in the form of painting, video, sculpture, and installation.
Seal draws inspiration from such disparate sources as industrial design, science fiction movies, Tantric tradition, and personal, formative experiences. Her Childhood Too installation employs vaguely threatening objects remembered from her childhood bedroom to form an escape mechanism into a futuristic parallel reality. A giant white plastic blister erupts from a white shag rug while fluorescent glowing acrylic cylinders suggestive of nuclear fuel rods hang mobile-like in front of albino alligators swimming in a sea anemone wallpaper. Seal is a magician of materials whose work draws you in while simultaneously warning to engage at your own risk.
Opposite Seal’s dangling cobra, celeb sightings that of Zooey Deschanel and transgender entertainer Amanda Lepore in luscious oil paint struggle to keep from drowning in sugary surface oblivion. Wells’ paintings jump off the traditional surface into a world of cutout candied shapes. The bright oil cutouts dance along the floors, walls. and ceiling to surrounding viewers with a bizarre cartooned environment. Each shape is bling-ed out with holographic paper commenting on the facade of attraction. Opposite her painting installation a wall of Wells’ fresh resin Sugar Tits light up the room. Her inquiry into the ethics of fascination continues in the new body of work Yumtastic! debuted here.
These ridiculously behaved objects and titillating images could only exist when this dynamic duo combines forces in a wild adventure of fem heroism that promises to be nothing short of faboo!
